Introduction to Yoga Nidra
The Art of Deep Relaxation and Conscious Awareness
Yoga Nidra is a powerful guided meditation technique practiced lying down in Savasana. In Sanskrit, "nidra" means sleep, and this practice is often called "yogic sleep" because it induces a state between wakefulness and sleep known as the hypnagogic state. This deep state of relaxation allows practitioners to release subconscious and unconscious tensions while expanding awareness.
More advanced Yoga Nidra practitioners can maintain awareness even in deep sleep, accessing what yogis call the "superconscious state," where the waking, dreaming, and deep sleep states integrate. This profound practice offers numerous benefits for the body, mind, and spirit, making it an essential tool for relaxation, healing, and self-discovery.
The Foundation of Yoga Nidra: Body Scan and Awareness Rotation
A core element of all Yoga Nidra practices is the body scan, or rotation of awareness through different body parts. This technique has its roots in the ancient tantric practice of Nyasa, where practitioners focus on different areas of the body while chanting mantras. Yogis believe that through conscious attention, every cell in the body can become awakened.
During Yoga Nidra, this structured awareness rotation creates a circuit of energy through the brain, guiding the mind into a deeply relaxed state. By entering the hypnagogic state, the body releases stress and tension, supporting overall well-being.
A Personalized Approach to Yoga Nidra
Having studied under Alan Finger, I have developed a structured nine-step approach called "Mona Anand’s ISHTA Yoga Nidra." This method is highly adaptable in both length and purpose, making it a versatile practice for different needs. Sessions can range from a few minutes to an hour, addressing specific imbalances such as insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, I create Yoga Nidra practices tailored for chakra and dosha balancing, which I teach in specialized Restorative Yoga Nidra workshops.
