Kerala Retreat

Cochin – Marari – Alleppey with Yogiraj Mona Anand

In March 2018, a group of yoga practitioners embarked on a transformative journey through Kerala, India, led by Yogiraj Mona Anand. This retreat offered an immersive experience of yoga, relaxation, and cultural exploration, set against the stunning backdrop of Kerala’s coastal landscapes, historic towns, and tranquil backwaters. The retreat combined daily yoga practices with the opportunity to experience India’s rich heritage, luxurious accommodations, and breathtaking scenery.

The Itinerary:

  • The journey began in Cochin (Kochi), a historic port city that has long served as a gateway for travelers and traders from around the world. Influences from the Arabs, Dutch, Chinese, Portuguese, and British can still be seen in the city’s architecture, cuisine, and vibrant culture. Participants stayed at the Brunton Boatyard, a stunning five-star heritage hotel that evokes the charm of colonial-era India.

Located in the heart of Fort Cochin, Brunton Boatyard is a beautifully restored building that once served as a trading house in British India’s bustling spice trade. With high ceilings, elegant hanging fans, and a blend of English, Portuguese, and Dutch architectural influences, the hotel provided an atmospheric setting for the first few days of the retreat. Guests enjoyed exploring the historic neighborhood, strolling along the waterfront, and visiting landmarks such as the Chinese fishing nets and St. Francis Church.

The yoga sessions in Cochin focused on grounding and setting intentions for the retreat. Against the backdrop of Kerala’s rich history, participants practiced asana, pranayama, and meditation, allowing themselves to arrive fully into the experience.

  • After three days in the vibrant energy of Cochin, the retreat shifted to the peaceful shores of Marari Beach. Located in the coastal village of Mararikulam, this resort is a tribute to Kerala’s traditional fishing communities. Marari Beach Resort, spread across 30 acres of coconut groves, lotus ponds, and lush gardens, offered the perfect environment for deep relaxation and connection to nature.

At Marari Beach, yoga practices became more fluid and meditative, in sync with the rhythm of the waves and the gentle ocean breeze. Mornings began with sunrise yoga on the beach, while evenings featured restorative sessions and sound healing under the starlit sky. The resort’s sustainable ethos, with an organic farm, Ayurvedic spa treatments, and locally inspired cuisine, enhanced the holistic experience.

Guests indulged in Ayurvedic massages, swam in the Arabian Sea, and enjoyed leisurely walks through the coconut groves. The retreat also included cultural experiences, such as visits to nearby fishing villages and traditional Keralan performances.

  • The retreat culminated with an unforgettable houseboat journey through the backwaters of Alleppey, also known as the Venice of the East. Drifting along the serene canals and lagoons, participants had the chance to witness Kerala’s rural beauty up close—lush rice paddies, charming villages, and local fishermen at work.

Staying overnight on a traditional Kerala houseboat, guests were surrounded by the stillness of nature, with only the gentle sounds of water lapping against the boat. This portion of the retreat emphasized deep relaxation, journaling, and silent reflection, allowing participants to integrate their experiences before concluding their journey.

The retreat officially ended on March 25, but for those wishing to continue their exploration of India, an optional 6-day sightseeing extension was offered.

  • For participants who chose to extend their trip, the adventure continued in two of India’s most fascinating cities: Mumbai and Udaipur.

    • Mumbai: Trident Nariman Point
In Mumbai, participants stayed at the iconic Trident Nariman Point, a luxury hotel with breathtaking views of Marine Drive and the Arabian Sea. Known as the city that never sleeps, Mumbai offered an exciting mix of modern energy and historic landmarks. Guests explored the Gateway of India, vibrant markets, and renowned restaurants.

    • Udaipur: The City of Lakes
The journey then led to Udaipur, Rajasthan’s romantic “City of Lakes.” At Trident Udaipur, a stunning lakeside property, participants enjoyed views of Lake Pichola and explored the majestic City Palace, Jagmandir, and the Monsoon Palace. Traditional Mewari cuisine and sunset boat rides added to the magical experience.

Our 2018 Yoga Retreat to Kerala with Yogiraj Mona Anand was much more than a trip—it was an opportunity for deep rejuvenation, self-exploration, and cultural immersion. From practicing yoga by the Arabian Sea to gliding through Kerala’s backwaters and experiencing the grandeur of Rajasthan, participants returned home feeling deeply nourished, inspired, and connected to the beauty of India.
